UBC News Update June 2023

Media Release _ Urunga Business and Community (UBC)

Issues and opportunities are always bubbling away in Urunga and the Urunga Business and Community Inc (UBC)  the local Chamber of Commerce, meets monthly to progress these on behalf of our members and community.

In July over 60 guests attended Anchors Wharf to hear Bonza Airlines CEO, Tim Jordan, a Urunga resident, talk about the Bonza business model. Ironically, this was on the same day as the Coffs Harbour service was cancelled. Tim is an engaging speaker and his story about his commute between Kazakhstan to Urunga was amazing. Follow our website for details of our next event.

A major project has been creating a Masterplan for the greater Urunga district. UBC instigated a survey to gather community feedback from over 200 responses covering accessibility, signage, parking, footpaths, sports facilities, cycle paths and future development.

A Masterplan plan is a documented way forward for the town and assists UBC and others to apply for grants.  We are also working closely with Bellingen Council to develop a plan for the CBD to improve parking, lighting and encourage more outdoor business activity.

UBC was recently successful obtaining a grant of $377,000 to upgrade Seniors Hall through the State Government. The funds will be used to refurbish the Hall and make it more usable. Currently plans are drawn up and a DA is submitted to Council.

UBC are also working with Council on directional signs in Urunga (Boardwalk, Lido etc)

Unauthorized use of the foreshore on Atherton Drive is an ongoing issue. We are applying pressure to Council and Crown Lands to clear this up and return community access to the river.

Small wins for the town have been bike racks and a community noticeboard outside the Literary Institute. The planter boxes that Chamber placed in town now have community support and will look fresh for summer.

We have had regular contact with the police regarding vandalism and minor crimes. The most effective way for community to report crime is to the local police. More complaints leads to more Police resources being directed to the issue.

Christmas is around the corner and planning for URUNGAlights is underway including the return of a traditional Carols night on December 23rd.
